Polypropylene (PP) is widely used in plastic products because of its low density, chemical resistance, and good mechanical properties. However, its low surface energy makes it difficult to bond with many conventional adhesives. Poor surface wetting can limit the contact between an adhesive and the PP substrate, making reliable adhesion a challenge.
RISUN has developed a solution for bonding polypropylene through improvements to raw material design and formulation adjustment. These changes were aimed at improving the adhesion of STP polymer-based adhesive systems to PP substrates.
Not only relying solely on resin formulations, RISUN adjusted its material approach to address the specific bonding challenges associated with polypropylene. Polymer design further supported the development of a capability of bonding this difficult-to-adhere-to plastic.
The resulting solution enables STP polymer-based adhesives to bond to PP, extending their potential use beyond substrates that are easier to adhere to. As with other adhesive systems, the final bonding performance depends on the complete formulation, substrate condition, and application process. Surface treatment and other preparation requirements should therefore be evaluated for the specific PP material and intended bonding conditions.
Successful PP bonding requires a material-specific approach rather than assuming that one resin performs equally across all plastics. RISUN has developed an STP polymer solution for polypropylene bonding, providing adhesive manufacturers with an option for formulating adhesives for challenging plastic substrates.
