Risun Plastic Bonding: A New STP Polymer based Solution to PMMA

Risun Plastic Bonding: A New STP Polymer based Solution to PMMA

2026-10-15

Facing the Challenges of PMMA Bonding

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), commonly known as acrylic, is valued for its transparency, weatherability, and optical appearance. Bonding PMMA requires attention not only to adhesion but also to the condition of the material surface and the potential effects of the adhesive system on the finished substrate.

Conventional adhesive formulations may not provide the desired balance of substrate adhesion and material compatibility. Selecting an appropriate polymer and adjusting the formulation are therefore important when developing an adhesive for PMMA.

RISUN Developed an STP Polymer Solution for PMMA

RISUN has successfully developed an STP polymer solution for PMMA bonding through raw material improvements and production process updates. The development focused on adapting the polymer material to the bonding characteristics of acrylic substrates rather than relying on an unchanged, general-purpose resin.

By developing the raw material and updating the production process, RISUN established a solution that enables STP polymer-based adhesives to bond PMMA. This work expands the range of plastic substrates that can be addressed with RISUN’s STP polymer technology.

Achieving Adhesion to Acrylic Substrates

The developed solution provides a basis for formulating adhesives for PMMA materials. For PMMA, adhesion is only one part of material compatibility.Stress cracking and the condition of the bonded surface may also need to be evaluated, particularly when the finished component must retain its original appearance. These factors depend on the adhesive formulation, PMMA grade, and bonding conditions.

A Material-Specific Approach to Plastic Bonding

PMMA bonding illustrates why adhesive development must account for the characteristics of each substrate. RISUN’s successful development of an STP polymer solution for acrylic materials reflects the role of raw material modification in expanding polymer adhesion capabilities.

For adhesive manufacturers, this provides a material-specific starting point for developing formulations for PMMA, with final performance assessed against the requirements of the intended application.
